Announcement: Summer 2008

RU Field School to Search for Remains of Marines Killed During Battle of Guadalcanal

In July, Radford Universitys Forensic Science Institute (RU FSI) will sponsor a field school in archaeology and geophysical survey at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands (ANTH 493 3 hours credit).  RU students, under the supervision of RU anthropologists Cliff and Donna Boyd and geophysicist Rhett Herman will attempt to locate the remains of members of the US Marine Goettge Patrol killed during the August 1942 Battle for Guadalcanal.

There have been several attempts to locate the remains of this patrol over the past 20 years.  Most recently, a private organization, Greatest Generation MIA Recoveries, has been collecting documentation on the patrol and its history.  This organization says it has located the most likely site for the recovery of these remains and has asked the RU Forensic Science Institute for assistance.

The goal of the field school is to positively identify the location of the WWII marines remains and the training of students in archaeological survey and geophysical remote sensing techniques.  If the remains are found, the U.S. Army Joint POW Command Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii will be notified to direct the removal of these individuals.

The RU FSI is accepting student applications for participation in the 2008 Radford University Field School in Archaeology and Geophysical Survey. Registration for this course is limited and is by permission of anthropology professor Cliff Boyd. For more information, see the RU FSI website rufsi.asp.radford.edu and click on the link Research and News.

The Radford University Anthropology Program offers an archaeological field school, usually every other summer.
Students obtain first-hand experience in a variety of archaeological field methods – from survey to excavation – by doing fieldwork on different archaeological sites in the region.

In recent years these have included prehistoric Native American sites like Keyser Farm (44PA1) near Luray, Virginia, and historic Civil War fortifications in Saltville, Virginia. With this field school experience, students are qualified for paid work as archaeological field assistants, and many have gone on to work for private consulting firms or the state or federal government in this capacity.

Contact Dr. Cliff Boyd to learn more about the RU Archaeological Field School.
