Applied Anthropology

Applied Anthropology

*  Puts anthropological methods and perspectives into "practice" to work with the public to solve human problems
*  RU offers extensive service-learning opportunities to “apply” your anthropology training and practice career-building skills while assisting community projects

Applied Anthropology involves putting anthropological knowledge, methods, and perspectives "to work," or into "practice" to work with the public to solve contemporary human problems.  Applied anthropology practitioners work in economic development, community planning, business, museums and tourism, programs providing health care and educational assistance to communities, forensic anthropology, and cultural resource management, to list just a few options.

RU offers ANTH 361, Applied Anthropology, a class designed to introduce students to the wide range of career possibilities in Applied Anthropology.  We also offer ANTH 461, Applied Anthropology Experience, an advanced class designed to give students hands-on training and resume-building experience doing applied work.

In addition, many of our classes in Cultural Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, and Archaeology offer students opportunities to gain applied experience.

The students in the 2007 ANTH 461 class, standing in the photo to the left, prepared a consulting report with recommendations for revitalizing the Mt. View Cemetery, a historic Radford African-American cemetery, and are presenting their report to community members in the photo.
